April 26, 10:00 am-12:00 pm | Straube Plays Bach – An Exploration of Karl Straube’s 1913 Edition of Bach
Preston Hollow Presbyterian Church, Dallas
Dean Billmeyer and Christopher Anderson, Presenters

In 1913, C. F. Peters published a revision of volume 2 of the complete Bach organ works with extensive performance directions given by Karl Straube, the organist of the Leipzig Thomaskirche where Bach himself worked for many years. Straube’s extensive performance instructions in this volume go far beyond what one would expect in normal “editing” of a musical score, and represent a unique documentation of late-Romantic German performance practice.

In this presentation, Dean Billmeyer (University of Minnesota) and Christopher Anderson (Southern Methodist University) will describe the esthetics of this edition in relation to early 20th-century Bach interpretation. Dr. Billmeyer will tell the story of his recording of all ten pieces in 2017 on two Sauer organs in the Michaeliskirche in Leipzig, and in the Stadtkirche in Bad Salzungen, Germany. Demonstrations will include some of the unusual performance techniques found in Straube’s edition, and the presentation will include the performance of a complete work.
